A practical online workshop for early-career artists interested in making work with and/or for refugee communities.

Drawing on Phosphoros Theatre’s work we will reflect on the practical, ethical and methodological decision making that informs this area of creative practice, with plenty of time for discussion and questions.

Phosphoros Theatre works mainly with refugees and asylum seekers aged 15-25, though sometimes with older adults too. We produce creative work for the general public and deliver community-based projects. Our approach involves a combination of new writing, devised work and self-authorship. This workshop is ideal for artists interested in working alongside refugee communities in exciting, informed and responsive ways. The workshop will be led by Kate Duffy-Syedi, Co-Artistic Director and Visiting Lecturer in Applied Theatre at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and Syed Najibi, core member and trustee of Phosphoros Theatre.

Syed Najibi is an actor, activist and facilitator, he is currently performing in ‘All the beds I have slept in’ on tour across the UK, he is one of the leaders of Phosphoros Young Company and is a trustee of the charity. He regularly leads drama workshops for refugee youth and schools and training for professionals. Syed is also passionate about environmentally friendly energy. He is studying Sustainable Energy Engineering at Queen Mary University of London.

Kate Duffy-Syedi is one of the Artistic Directors of Phosphoros Theatre, leading on their participation work and representing the company in conferences relating to performance, youth work and forced migration. Kate has worked with the refugee community in various project management positions including mentoring, youth work, housing and advocacy. She has an MA in Migration and Diaspora Studies from SOAS. She is currently a PhD candidate at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (RCSSD). She is also a visiting lecturer focussing on theatre and migration and applied theatre.
