Dots/Phases by Jess Brodie
R&D Casting

If you would like this information in any other format please let me know at emma@emmaruse.com

We are casting for a week-long R&D of Jess Brodie’s new play Dots/Phases.  We are particularly interested in hearing from queer actors for this project, due to the nature of the play. We would also love to hear from those traditionally underrepresented in Scottish theatre.

Actors should be dextrous, enjoy playing with text and be prepared to throw themselves into the R&D Process.

About the Play

It’s 2022, and Mabel is Stuck with a capital S. But never fear! Tonight, for the first time in over 100 years, Weiss’ Comet is set to pass the Earth, bringing with it the answer to all of Mabel’s problems. All it’ll take is one wish.

Dots + Phases explores fluidity, freedom and how we, as queer people, reflect and internalise the perceptions of those around us.

About the Characters

MABEL: Late teens/early 20s, Mabel is energetic, intense and chaotic. A hopeless romantic at heart, she has a very confident front but a fragmented sense of self. Some experience or interest in physical comedy would be a plus. Mabel is bisexual.

ANDREW: Late 20s/early 30s. Andrew is a science teacher with something to prove. He holds on to reason and logic as anchors, but frequently feels insecure about his place in the world and what he’s going to leave behind. Andrew is gay.
