Website Platform, Easterhouse; Blairtummock Housing Association and Sculpture Placement Group (SPG)
Platform, Easterhouse; Blairtummock Housing Association and Sculpture Placement Group (SPG) are inviting expressions of interest for our new partnership research project Commission for Dual Purpose. The three organisations have formed a partnership to explore a new area of research being led by SPG as part of its ongoing action research practice.
For this project the partners would like to invite artists to consider two contrasting sites and audiences for the creation of a work or exhibition. From conception, the work produced must have a short term location and audience in mind – a 6 week exhibition at Platform Easterhouse, as well as a subsequent permanent location for the same work, in the back court of Blairtummock Housing Association housing.
This project continues SPG’s ongoing research into extending the lifespan of sculptures, locating them within non-art contexts and increasing access for those less likely to encounter contemporary art. Commission for Dual Purpose intervenes at a much earlier stage than previous projects we have delivered, asking artists to consider these two locations before the artwork is conceived and commissioned. Working with Blairtummock Housing Association and Platform fulfils a long-term ambition for SPG, in building partnerships and embedding legacy for future audiences at the point of commissioning a work.
This approach will allow SPG to gather research on the challenges and opportunities afforded to artists in working this way, namely the practicalities, financial and material implications of working in this way. Following the project’s completion SPG will develop a case study which will be disseminated and shared within the sector for consideration and possible replication by others in the future.
About the Partners
Sculpture Placement Group are a Community Interest Company based in Glasgow. We undertake action research to prolong the lifespan of sculptures, to reduce the visual arts’ sector on the environment, to improve the financial situation for artists and to extend access to sculpture to many more people.
Platform is the arts centre at the heart of The Bridge, located in Easterhouse, offering a year-round programme of cutting edge performance, music, visual arts and participation. Platform views culture and creativity as a bedrock of a healthy and inclusive society. Our work is rooted in our location and engages directly with our audiences. We work with a range of local and national partners to bring together communities and artists.
Blairtummock Housing Association vision is to secure a safe and attractive environment for current and future generations. Their mission is to give local people the power to deliver excellent housing and housing services and to improve the opportunities for our community.
The successful applicant will create a work(s) that consider both audiences and locations from the outset. Work(s) created will be put on short-term exhibition at Platform, Easterhouse. Following this it will be installed with the newly developed backcourts at (insert St Names) managed by Blairtummock Housing Association Easterhouse.
