Interview: June 2024

Govanhill Baths Community Trust is looking for new Board Members.

Govanhill Baths Community Trust (GBCT) is recruiting Board Members to join a dynamic Board to take forward the reopening of the Baths as a Wellbeing Centre. We’re looking for committed individuals who are keen to help the Trust re-open the Baths, and to contribute to the social, cultural and physical regeneration of Govanhill as a community in the Southside of Glasgow. This recruitment drive is directed specifically towards candidates from Black, Asian and minority  ethnic backgrounds (BAME); we aim to ensure that we have a wider representation on the Board to reflect the diversity of Govanhill.

What does the role involve?

The Board currently meets on a monthly basis, on the first Tuesday, at 6:30pm. The meetings typically run for approximately two hours. We expect regular attendance at meetings, as well as reading reports, draft policies and proposals in advance of meetings.

What skills, experience and expertise are we looking for?

To support our growth and development, we currently want to bring to the Board skills and experience in Facilities Management and Sustainable Buildings, so we will prioritise applicants with a background in this area. In addition, we always value knowledge of our local community. We are currently seeking support in developing an outreach programme to keep people informed about the building redevelopment, and we are doing the groundwork to put systems and procedures in place for when the building reopens. The Board employs 20+ employees, who work on maintaining a diverse community programme  of Arts and Wellbeing activities, including The People’s Pantry and Govanhill Youth Club. (These activities take place at The Deep End in Nithsdale Street, and at venues across Govanhill.)

What will I get out of it?

You’ll gain a thorough understanding of our projects, including their operations, and have access to detailed information about the construction project. You’ll also have the opportunity to provide input on the building’s atmosphere and operationsThere will be opportunities for training, and to represent the organisation at events. You will get priority access to some of our activities, copies of our publications, and you will meet new people – as we are a friendly and welcoming organisation.

What are the requirements?

Board members are required to live within a mile of Govanhill Baths, which extends to Pollokshields, Mount Florida and Shawlands. Applicants from further afield can be considered if they have particular skills that we are currently in need of. This recruitment process is aimed at candidates from Black, Asian and minority ethnic minorities (BAME), to ensure that the Board better reflects the diversity of Govanhill.

We encourage applications from all who believe they can contribute effectively regardless of age, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or belief. We welcome applications from the many community groups and individuals within the Govanhill area who have helped to shape Govanhill Baths Community Trust activities up to now. If you have any requirements for support, these can be discussed further during the interview process.

If you are interested, but feel you have specific barriers to joining (such as caring commitments, or you feel that you lack relevant experience), please let us know, so that we can talk about how we might address these. No previous experience of being a Board Member or Trustee is required. We actively encourage those who may not have previously considered joining a Board.  We will provide a full induction and any other training, support or equipment required.
