Website TheatreAdInf Ad Infinitum

Ad Infinitum are looking to recruit an experienced Stage Manager to work with us on our next devised production, Until I Find You / Hasta Encontrarte (working title). We’re looking for someone who is bilingual in Spanish and English, has strong attention to detail, and is experienced at working in a collaborative, devising environment.

Until I Find You / Hasta Encontrarte (working title) is a new theatre piece and an international collaboration between Ad Infinitum (UK) and El Ingenio Del Caldero (Mexico) examining the disturbing phenomenon of forced disappearances in Mexico. We have gathered stories of women known as ‘The Disappeared’ – speaking to their relatives, the authorities, social groups, and journalists. We will draw inspiration from these narratives and create a theatre piece unfolding the fragmented life of a mother slowly fading away in the never ending search for her disappeared daughter.

This project began in 2021 with some initial R&D, and the production of a podcast which you can listen to on our webpage here.

There will be five weeks of rehearsals for this production in June – July 2024, in Bristol, UK. There will then be a further two weeks of rehearsals which will take place in Mexico City where the show will then premiere at UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) in October. Some of the Creative team will be based in the UK, and some will be in Mexico.

Founded in 2007, Ad Infinitum is a multi-award-winning, internationally acclaimed theatre company. As a diverse-led arts organisation, we embrace difference through collaboration, enabling a more representative theatre culture to exist by placing those minoritised by society at the heart of our work.

Based in Bristol, we work internationally with a wide range of artists to develop, devise and tour our creative projects.

The engagement will be for 5 weeks in Bristol for rehearsals, including some work-in-progress sharings (exact location/s TBC) from Monday 17 June – Friday 19 July.

There is the possibility of travelling to Mexico for two weeks of rehearsals in October. This is subject to additional funding and would be further discussed with the candidate at interview. We are happy to receive applications from people who are available for rehearsals in Bristol but not the dates in Mexico, and the candidate’s availability for Mexico won’t affect our decision on who we recruit.

The Stage Manager will be running the rehearsal room on a day-to-day basis. They will work closely with the Director and Co-creator of the production Nir Paldi, Performer and Co-creator Vicky Araico Casas, Producer Mia Lake, the Production Manager, and the Creative team.

This unique and exciting collaboration across two countries will require excellent communication and organisation from the Stage Manager, together with the Production Manager, to ensure that the whole team (in both the UK and Mexico) are kept up-to-date, have all the information they need in an accessible format, and can effectively collaborate with each other.

The Key Deliverables for this role include:

  • Work with the Director to create a detailed rehearsal schedule

  • Create and distribute call sheets in collaboration with the creative team (based in the UK and Mexico)

  • Prepare the rehearsal room so it’s ready to start ahead of company arrival

  • Oversee the smooth running of the rehearsal room, ensuring rehearsals run to schedule

  • Play an active part in the rehearsal process, which will include:

    • taking extensive rehearsal notes (in both Spanish and English)

    • recording the written script in both languages (Spanish and English) as it is created in the devising process

    • filming and uploading recordings at the end of each rehearsal day

  • Act as primary liaison for Ad Infinitum with technical venue staff in Mexico

  • Work with the designers to help realise set, lighting and sound designs for the production, across teams who will be based in both the UK and Mexico

  • Work with the designer to purchase set and costume elements and ensure set, costumes and props are maintained throughout the rehearsals and any work-in-progress sharings

  • Support with coordinating and ensuring the smooth running of visits from secondary school students to watch rehearsals

  • Complete and distribute show & rehearsal reports for any work-in-progress sharings and rehearsal days

  • Work with the Production Manager to arrange transportation of set to and from each rehearsal location

  • Support the get in and get out of each rehearsal location

  • Manage petty cash and receipts for the purchase of props and equipment

  • Operate any sound and lighting for work-in-progress sharings

  • Ensure health and safety protocols are adhered to at all times

  • Support the company with any other tasks as can be reasonably required for the smooth running of rehearsals and work-in-progress sharings

  • Some evening and weekend work will be required

We will pay a weekly rate of £585. The Stage Manager will be contracted and paid as a freelancer and therefore responsible for all associated taxes due to HMRC.

If not based in the Bristol area, Ad Infinitum will provide accommodation, cover travel expenses, and pay daily allowances in line with current ITC rates.

  • Experience of running devising-based rehearsal rooms and arranging schedules

  • The ability to remain flexible and adjust to an evolving devised rehearsal process

  • Fluent in spoken and written English and Spanish

  • Excellent communication skills and experience of collaborating with a creative team

  • Ability to remain calm under pressure

  • Excellent organisational skills

  • Good knowledge of and experience in operating sound and lighting

  • Qlab programming experience
