Website SWtheatre Sleeping Warrior Theatre Company

Sleeping Warrior Theatre Company are looking for an assistant director for our upcoming musical
To Save The Sea written and directed by Andy McGregor and Isla Cowan via an FST bursary.
Dates: 21 August – 26 September
Base: Glasgow
Fee: £2475 plus reasonable expenses if based outside of Glasgow
Hours: 10am – 6pm Monday – Friday
Please note this is an educational bursary and therefore tax-free and is based on the rate of pay provided by the Federation of Scottish Theatre. More about FST bursaries can be found here – https://www.scottishtheatre.org/sector-support/fst-bursaries/
To Save The Sea is a new sung-through musical inspired by a real-life protest that took place on the
Brent Spar, an oil store in the North Sea, in 1995. While Shell planned to dump the defunct structure
in the ocean, a group of activists occupied the store launching Greenpeace’s biggest protest yet. As
the campaign gained momentum, pressure mounted on those in power and political battles ensued at
sea and on land – including helicopters, bombs, water cannons, boycotts, and Shell losing 50% of its
profits in places.
We are looking for someone of any experience who would help us to bring this epic David vs Goliath
story to life. Our focus is on a candidate who can demonstrate their interest in directing, particularly in
musical theatre, and is especially keen to create (or has created) their own theatre company. As well
as being in the rehearsal room and being an integral part of the process, we will provide one-to-one
sessions to help further your company’s plans based on our own experience, including assisting
with/offering advice on funding applications etc.
We want this role to be as active as possible, so it will be ideal for somebody who can identify gaps in
the rehearsal room that need to be filled, can communicate clearly with actors, stage management
and all the other roles in the room and someone who isn’t afraid of offering creative ideas.

Next Steps:

We plan to work with a suitable candidate to apply with us for an FST bursary together, the outcome of which will be w/c 13 May. Please note this position will be contingent on a successful bid. The successful applicants should be free to work on the application with the Sleeping Warrior team w/c 29 April. We can offer £100 for this and the process will be led by Sleeping Warrior to minimise work from the applicant.

Application process:

If you are interested please get in touch with us at info@sleepingwarriotheatre.com with an attached
cover letter (1 page will do, but don’t sweat over it!) or a link to a video/audio file no more than 3
minutes describing why you think you’d be suitable for this role and what you’d hope to learn from the
experience.
If you have any questions then please email us at the same email address, and if you’re unsure if you
are the right person for this job (never done MT, haven’t directed a play yet etc.) – then we’d
encourage you to apply anyway, as we are most interested in what you might learn from the process.
DeadlineWednesday 17 April at 12 noon
InterviewsThursday 25 April. Interviews will be held in person in Glasgow but online interviews will also be considered if travel is a barrier for you.
